Next Game – Gillingham (home)

We all get a taste for the FA Cup last season and for many Burnley fans it was the first time they had seen anything resembling an FA Cup run.

This season’s got underway with a win at Mansfield and our reward is a home tie at last against fellow First Division club Gillingham.

The Gills were the star turn in the last round when they beat Premiership Charlton Athletic 3-2 at the Priestfield Stadium and this despite the fact that ex-Claret Ian Cox put through his own goal with little over 30 seconds gone.

Gillingham have had an inconsistent season and are currently just one place above us although they have three points more and have a game in hand.

It won’t be just the same squad that takes on Burnley though that lost to us back in August. Marlon King and former Claret Paul Shaw were both involved that day but both have now gone.

King signed for Nottingham Forest as a replacement for Marlon Harewood whilst Paul Shaw was a more recent departure moving to Sheffield United.

There have been signings and the first of these was goalkeeper Bertrand Bossu from non-league Hayes.

Since they have signed Darius Henderson from Reading, Patrick Agyemang from Franchise and Grimsby’s Alan Pouton and to that they also have Birmingham keeper Nico Vaesen on loan.

They have lost both league games since the win against Charlton going down 3-0 at home to Sheffield United and following that up with a 2-1 defeat at Derby that saw both John Hills and Ian Cox sent off.

Derby deserved the win and were 2-0 up before Tommy Johnson pulled a goal back for the Gills but there was never much hope of them recovering with the two man difference.

The team, which will be different from the one that plays at the Turf tomorrow was: Nico Vaesen, Nyron Nosworthy, Ian Cox, Chris Hope, John Hills, Paul Smith, Danny Spiller (Andy Hessenthaler 62), Mark Saunders, Tommy Johnson (Andrew Crofts 82), Darius Henderson (Leon Johnson 39), Patrick Agyemang. Subs not used: Bertrand Bossu, Kevin James.

Tomorrow sees the Clarets and Gillingham meet for the first time ever in the FA Cup.
