Bishop was registered with three clubs before making his professional debut at the age of 19. Both Stoke, where he served his apprenticeship and Watford were home to Charlie though neither offered him a debut. This came when he signed for Bury in 1987. Over a 3 year period he racked up around 135 appearances, establishing himself well in the team.
His ability was noticed by Barnsley who swooped to sign him for £50k and he was seen as a regular starter at Oakwell. He joined them at around the same time as Steve Davis (Mk1) had departed us for them and slotted in the back line alongside him. He played around 150 games for the Tykes but found his place in the team under threat in 1996 when Davis returned from long-term injury. After losing his place in the side he was made available for loan and returned to the North West.
PNE took him on firstly on a one month deal and in March '96 new Claret manager Adrian Heath swooped to add him to our ranks for the season run-in. Making his debut away at Wycombe alongside other deadline day signing Paul Mahorn, he came into the side at left back in place of ankle break victim Chris Vinnicombe. He made an impression in his 9 games and Heath hoped to make the deal permanent in the summer.
However, although we agreed a fee alleged to be around £80k with Barnsley, Bishop rejected the contract on offer. He was unwilling to lower his wage demands. Weeks later he signed on with 3rd division Wigan where moneybags Dave Whelan was bankrolling their promotion push. The deal went through at £20k, which just proved that the price quoted to Burnley for a player was always higher.
Bishop was named captain and led them to the championship in his 1st season. However, due to the need of the chairman for constant progress Bishop was replaced and signed for Northampton for the same fee they had paid for him. Injury disrupted his time with the Cobblers and he moved into non-league with Derbyshire side Ilkeston in 1999. His last known career move was when he was made manager of Ilkeston in October 2001 at the age of 33.
