'Big' Peter Swan began his career as a youngster at Leeds United, signing pro forms in 1984. He saw himself as a forward, but was used mainly as a defender in the reserve team. His four year stint at Elland Road saw him used sparingly, with most of his appearances coming under the management of Billy Bremner. His time at Leeds saw him play, albeit briefly, with Claret legend Roger Eli, who also started with the Whites.
He joined Hull for a then record fee of £200,000 as former manager Eddie Gray looked to add some backbone to his struggling Tigers team. He played primarily as a centre half for Hull though his occasional switches to the position of emergency striker became affectionately known as 'The Swan Option' amongst Tigers fans.
It was while at Hull he first came under the tutelage of Stan Ternent, who cut his teeth at Boothferry Park. The two developed an understanding which would have an impact on the rest of the career of the big stopper. Stan's time was brief at the club - seen as an expensive flop, he left and the side were relegated. Swanny was given the opportunity to remain in the division with Port Vale and jumped at the chance sealing a £300,000 deal.
A short spell at Vale Park and another at Home Park with Plymouth saw Swan pick up an unwanted journeyman tag. His time at Plymouth ended as his relationship with manager Neil Warnock soured and he secured his 1st move to the Clarets. This deal brought about combined transfers total of £1m in his career.
An uncompromising centre half, Swan was a particular favourite of mine. He incurred the wrath of many opposing manager, in particular Dario Gradi, for his no nonsense approach. He was given the chance to rejoin Stan at Bury after only 2 seasons with us and did so for £50,000, allowing him to again play football in the 2nd tier of English football.
Stan soon departed for the Turf though and his replacement was Colin - nemesis of Swanny. Swan's opinion of Warnock was very similar to Stan's and before long the big defender was made available despite having a year left on his contract. He re-signed for us in the wake of the York City game but his 2nd spell was plagued by injuries and he was released part way though the next season. He signed for York, but was never truly fit and retired after a handful of games.
He tried his hand at coaching with Ossett Town but had little success as reserve team manager. One of his major claims to fame could be the regular name check that he got every Saturday morning for a couple of years on Sky Sports Soccer AM. Following Liam Daish's nod to his best friend in football, each guest would then say that he was also their biggest friend in football too, regardless of whether they'd played with him or not.
