Profile by Dave Blackburn

Tony Ellis joined Burnley in the summer of 2001, aged 36, having been released by Rochdale. This seemed an uninspiring signing and for the most part turned out to be, as Ellis would never start a game in his sole season at Burnley.

Making ten substitute appearances, first at Sheffield Wednesday and last at Wimbledon, Ellis did attain a certain level of cult status by scoring the final and winning goal in a tightly contested affair at Bradford, hitting the back of the net in the 85th minute to seal a 3-2 victory for the Clarets.

Sadly, Ellis couldn't repeat the feat on a regular basis, and was released at the end of the 2001/02 season with only that goal to his name, to join then-Conference side Leigh RMI. Before hanging up his boots, Ellis played for Mossley and Hyde United.

After retiring, Ellis took up a job coaching youth teams at Burnley, but has since left and currently holds the position of Director of Youth Development at Rochdale.
