Clarets look set to resign from Football League

Despite all the cries that the Phoenix League was dead we can reveal that this is anything but the case. The gang of six made up of Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Man City, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves are continuing with their plans to form a breakaway league outside of the Football League and want to include Celtic and Rangers.

Some of the other clubs in the First Division are against this and it is one of these clubs Walsall who have let the cat out of the bag. They have also revealed that after a meeting of chairmen at Coventry yesterday many of the First Division clubs are backing them and this will almost certainly include Burnley.

Walsall have said they may well be forced to resign themselves because if they don't and the new league does go ahead they will not be able to play in it.

We said a couple of weeks ago that there was no chance of this disappearing, that it was just a matter of when on not if it was to happen. It looks like some clubs are now determined that it will start next season with the two Scottish clubs and apparently a TV deal with Sky. That has to be a bonus, it will mean more fans being able to watch the Clarets on TV.

Friday is the significant date, provisional resignations from the league must be submitted by that date and confirmed by the beginning of April, yes April Fools Day and probably appropriate.

Many people in football are just damn greedy, look at the disgraceful behaviour of a little club like Canvey Island this week, and this is born out of sheer greed by clubs, some of whom cannot come close to running their clubs efficiently.

After the last chairmen's meeting Burnley Football Club were quick to issue statements after finding out about the gang of six, this time there has been a complete silence from Turf Moor on the issue. It looks very much like Burnley are now going to be heavily involved in setting up a league away from the Football League.

The next 48 hours should be interesting as more news leaks out prior to Friday and then we will have to wait and see whether the resignations do go into the league. I have a hunch they will.
