Bates again for FA Cup Third Round

He's a referee who hasn't brought us much success over the years in terms of results but in fairness he's a referee who hasn't really caused us any problems, other than the game at Leeds in the 2005/06 season.

The last time he refereed a home game was in the first fixture of last season when his biggest problem was deciding whether to kick off with a parachutist on the stand roof. At QPR last January he had little to do.

He's not the most demonstrative referee when it comes to cards and in his last match of 2009 he used his red card for the first time this season when he sent off Bradford City's Simon Ramsden in their 3-0 Johnstone Paints defeat at Carlisle.

In 17 games he's handed out 44 yellow cards and of those 16 have gone to home team players and 28 to away team players suggesting we are the more likely to suffer yellow cards tomorrow.

His assistant referees are Michael Murphy (West Midlands) and Ian Smedley (Derbyshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Steve Rushton (Staffordshire).
