"We have been looking for someone who could provide more of a threat from the wing. Steve has that experience and a proven track record of goals from that position. He looked physically good against our reserves on Tuesday, and as quick and as dangerous as he was when he was here with us. He scored two good goals and after gaining permission from Burnley, we have now spoken to him.
"He seems keen to come back to Crewe on loan and give something back. He wants to help us out and we know his qualities. That was a very encouraging sign and we are waiting now to hear from Burnley.
"There seems to be some activity going on there, so maybe that's the reason for the short delay. We just have to sit on this one but if we get the green light then it is something we would do."
Crewe have said that it is now unlikely that Jones would be available in time for the game at Carlisle tomorrow. Interestingly Carlisle had shown an interest in taking Jones themselves but have now turned their attentions to Scunthorpe's Cleveland Taylor.
