In the Championship – Yorkshire down to London

Steve Kabba- scored in both games for Sheffield United
Does this mean the league table is now beginning to take shape? I would suggest not even though a year ago at the same stage Wigan were top and Rotherham were bottom. A closer look reveals that Stoke were second with Plymouth, Coventry and Millwall all in the play off positions whilst Sunderland, who went on to win the league, were in seventeenth place with just five points and they went on to become Champions.

Warnock’s lot might not have had the toughest fixtures over the weekend but you can only beat what is placed in front of you and they did that with a 2-1 home victory over Coventry followed by a 3-1 win at Crewe.

Steve Kabba scored in both games whilst defender David Unsworth, the signing that allowed us to go in for Jon Harley, marked his debut with a goal in the Coventry win scoring from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile down at the bottom it was two more defeats for Millwall who incredibly still have the same acting chairman and the same manager as they did a week ago. They scored one of the goals of the day on Saturday from Ben May and had another disallowed for offside that did not look a good decision.

But they fell to a 2-1 defeat against ten men Ipswich and then went down by the same score at Luton on Monday.

That meant two wins for Luton, the only other side besides Sheffield United to take six points, their other win coming with a 2-0 win at Leicester on Saturday and if Ben May’s goal for Millwall was one of the best goals of the weekend then Ahmet Brkovic’s opener at the Crisp Bowl definitely was. He got an overheard kick just right and it rocketed into the net giving the Scottish club’s goalkeeper Rab Douglas no chance.

Crewe, beaten by Sheffield United, Norwich and Plymouth were the other sides to lose both games. Crewe had lost 2-0 at in form Southampton on the Saturday for whom Algerian Djamel Belmadi scored a stunning first goal.

Why it mean him having to run into the stand to hug Harry Redknapp though remains a mystery as did the fact that flood warden Andy Hall didn’t book him for it.

Dean Ashton - scored what was nothing more than a consolation goal for Norwich at Stoke
What’s going on at Norwich? Are the fans not obeying Delia’s orders and getting behind the side? It is an amazing turn round over in Norfolk where they were the pre-season favourites for promotion. It might just be a difficult start but incredibly it has led to some fans calling for the head of manager Nigel Worthington.

They were beaten 1-0 at home to Leeds on Saturday and two days later, although Dean Ashton scored, they were beaten 3-1 at Stoke. They sit perilously just one place above Millwall. Surely Worthington, who looked more than secure, is not going to be the first manager to lose his job this season.

And that leaves our other Scottish club Plymouth for whom Taribo West was finally allowed to play. They didn’t bother scoring a goal in either game and lost 1-0 at home to Hull before going down at Brighton 2-0.

This is nothing like the start the Pilgrims had last season, a start that ulitmately saved them from relegation last May.

One final and interesting thought, in total contrast to last season. Only three of the top four have scored more goals than Burnley and only bottom club Millwall have conceded more.
