Joey goal wins monthly award

Joey Gudjonsson
That's when Robbie Blake turned quickly not too far outside his own box and played a delightful ball for Joey Gudjonsson, on as a substitute for Kyle Lafferty. He burst clear from the half way line and set himself for a one-on-one with Watford goalkeeper Mart Poom.

He took the ball past the keeper to his left and Poom fouled him. He managed to stay on his feet and then hit home from a tight angle before celebrating in front of the Burnley fans. The much maligned Icelandic international was now a hero, he'd just about ensured our fourth away victory of the season.

With an international weekend and a couple of 0-0 draws thrown in it was one of only three goals scored in November and so we postponed our Goal of the Month vote and had a joint one for November and December. Despite the goal having been scored six weeks ago it was very much remembered, so much so that 45.4% of voters chose it as their goal of the month.

It was a clear, clear winner with Kyle Lafferty's goal at Wolves, which gave us a 2-1 lead, coming second with 17.6% of the vote. Chris McCann collected 9.4% with his goal against Preston to finish third.

My choice? Back to Watford and I selected Andy Gray's opener from that game. It came from a free kick out to Wade Elliott and an inch perfect cross that Gray headed in. It might have got my support but not from many others and was joint ninth from eleven goals.

Joey's goal joins three others in the monthly awards. The previous winners were Ade Akinbiyi's against Oldham in the Carling Cup (August), Clarke Carlisle's stoppage time overhead kick that won us a dramatic point at Bristol City (September) and our opener in the home defeat against Southampton from Chris McCann (October). Those four goals will automatically be included in our Goal of the Season poll in May.
