Coming up against a very good Portugal side, they were beaten 2-0 in the first of the two games on Tuesday in Abrantes and followed that up with a 1-0 defeat today in Bonitos.
Metz was named as a substitute for the first game but came on, replacing Leeds' Frankie Mulhern, with over half an hour to go and in today's game was in the starting eleven and played the full game.
He won his place today after making an impact in his earlier substitute appearance. It was good work from the Burnley striker that led to Ireland winning a penalty which they failed to score from and he was closest to getting a goal for them just a few minutes from the end when he latched onto a back pass but couldn't just steer it past the advancing goalkeeper.
Coach Paul Doolin was pleased with his players in what he said were two difficult games. "It was a tough test for us," he said. Portugal were an excellent side."
