Somehow he even managed to find time to hand out a couple of yellow cards, one to each side.
It wasn’t his only visit to the Turf last season, he was also referee for our cup replay against Fulham when he sent off Fulham’s Sean Davis after he tried to rip Tony Grant’s leg in two. The only Burnley player booked that night was Ian Moore, and quite rightly so, for diving.
This season he got off to a flying start and sent off a player in his first two matches. Michael Hughes of Crystal Palace was the first to see red in a 1-0 home win against Watford and a week later Charlton’s Scott Parker was sent off in a 4-0 win at Wolves.
There has only been one more red card in nineteen games since and that was Portsmouth’s Dejan Stefanovic at Bolton in a 1-0 defeat.
He has used his yellow card on 76 occasions this season in 21 matches with 36 of them going to home team players and the other 40 to away team players. He has twice had games with seven yellow cards and twice with none at all.
That means if he has an average game tonight he will hand out either three our four yellow cards.
His assistants tonight are Jim Devine from Cleveland and Trevor Massey from Cheshire.
