Simply he could walk away for nothing unless he does sign one. The other option, and not one that anyone would choose is to sell him by Thursday to ensure we get a fee for him.
Burnley fans were singing, 'We've got Wade Elliott' during yesterday's win over Scunthorpe and although it might not have quite had the Latin rhythm of the Bewley Brothers song dedicated to him the sentiment was just the same.
Any worries have been thankfully dampened with Wade's comments both before and after the game. In the match day programme he said, "I am really enjoying my football," and added, "We are all desperate to achieve something and not just let this season fizzle out."
Just what we wanted to hear, and after the game he spoke positively about his Burnley future. "I enjoy it here," he said. "I have improved and progressed as a player and the gaffer is very positive in his approach. He likes to play attacking football and it shows in our performances. There is a good atmosphere at the club at the moment.
"Everybody has ambitions to play at the very top level but I think that my contract will all get taken care of in due course."
Burnley fans will very much be hoping that due course won't be too far away - then the worries can stop and, just like the Bewley Brothers did, we can continue to sing, 'We've got Wade Elliott'.
