Wiley is cup ref

Last updated : 05 January 2008 By Tony Scholes
Wiley became a Football League referee for the 1995/96 season and this is set to be his last with him reaching the age of 48 in May. It was some four years before he made it to the Premiership, getting his first game in August 1999 at the Dell in a game that saw Leeds beat Southampton 3-0.

Because he has predominantly officiated in the top division we haven't seen much of him, but Arsenal have and this will the fourth of their games this season he's refereed, and he's been a busy man in the other three.

Altogether he's yellow carded 21 players in those three games and also sent off Blackburn's Ryan Nelsen in the first of those three games and he remains the only player he's sent off this season.

Bookings have been plentiful though, as those three games suggest. Eight yellows plus that red in Arsenal's draw at Blackburn and nine yellows in their home win against Chelsea have been Wiley's busiest two games this season in terms of cards.

In total he has handed out 76 yellow cards in 23 games which is about average for him. Of those cards 37 have gone to home team players and 39 to away team players.

It won't be the first time our paths have crossed in the FA Cup - he refereed our sixth round tie at Watford five years ago. He was also the referee when we lost at home to Grimsby in the Auto Windscreens Shield. The defeat that night cost us a trip to Wembley.

He will be assisted by Darren Cann (Norfolk) and Trevor Massey (Cheshire) whilst Select Group referee Peter Walton (Northampton), who had a shocking game when he refereed our league game at Cardiff last season, will be on duty as the fourth official.
