We went down to only our third league defeat of the season, losing at Wigan in controversial circumstances with the home side being awarded a dubious penalty. It was a game we dominated for the first half and one we could have had wrapped up by half time.

It means Wigan have gone two points clear of us although they have played three games more but it is Tranmere who have gone top following a 3-0 home win against Carlisle last Friday.

One problem that the youngsters could face in their attempts to win the league will be trying to get the games in. The league finishes soon prior to the start of the Merit League and we still have five games to play. It could well be that we don’t complete our fixtures, it won’t be the first time in recent years.

Meanwhile the reserves are still to play this year, we beat Wrexham on 8th December and haven’t played since following the postponement last week at Woodley Sports. This week’s game against Manchester United has also been put back until late February so it will be another nine days before we are in action again when we take on Shrewsbury at the Turf.

We are currently just above Shrewsbury and Wrexham down at the bottom of this league having been relegated last season.
