If the future's bright it shouldn't be this orange

A fine Claret - Danny Coyne
There should be no looking back, as this new look side begins to take shape and with only 67.5 footballing hours left of the season, there appears to be much to look forward to.

Yes this side is short on numbers and yes, if injuries hit, or form dips (before any additions are made), there are few options currently at the manager’s disposal, but after only being in charge for a few short weeks, it's clear to most if not all, this is already a side with a new outlook and a gritty determination, based on a new solid defensive line up and one that did well in the latter stages of this game to preserve the hard earned point that took them to an early eighth spot in the Championship.

In the opposition from South Yarkshire, also boosted by summer comings and goings, Neil Warnock's side will not be far away from the top of the table come next May, this was a stern opening day test against a strong side in a game of few chances played in blistering heat and unbroken skies. The only thing brighter than the sunshine were the visitors new away shirts; a more vivid kit has as yet to be seen and Clarets fans needed protection from the reflection of the orange glow emanating from the opposing half.

In what was a chance free opening to the game, both sides took their time to settle in to the new season and get their passing games going. For the Clarets this is preferred as a short, neat, efficient process where a patient build up is preferred.

Less so for the visitors where a get it up and at 'em approach is preferred, supported by physical tactics in a no nonsense style of increasing the pressure on the opponents whenever possible.

Still though, Clarets enjoyed the better of the opening half and despite an early scare, when Blades had a goal chalked off for offside on the quarter hour, Clarets took the lead moments after Duff had a seen a shot go wide of Kenny's upright. Down Clarets left, Chaplow twisted and turned Bromby before delivering a cross that eluded keeper Kenny, the ball going home off Hyde's knee with Gray looking to clear off the line as the two closed in on the loose ball.

Cue The Proclaimers as many a Claret danced in the sunshine from Hyde's debut goal, the Turf coming to life with the home side taking the lead.

There was little in the half from the visitors and going forwards all moves were directed at the short fused Hayles, who on more than one occasion, needed a calming down from an in-control referee Mr Joslin.

The visitors were though thwarted by a magnificent save from Coyne, who on twenty five minutes, despite seeing Harley's well struck half volley late, still managed to get down low to his left and tip away a shot destined for the bottom corner.

Harley was again unlucky ten minutes from the break, when he got free only to see his header from a corner go over the far angle of post and bar.

Clarets finished the half on top and some delightful play in the middle of the pitch saw Grant, Chaplow and Hyde all display their footballing qualities in a spell of neat interpassing, before the visitors resorted to their uncompromising side in bringing the entertainment to an end.

Ian Moore, the games only booking was cautioned, for repeated niggly fouls as the half closed. Steve Cotterill and his coaching staff have clearly worked on the striker's defensive and covering side to his game.

HT 1-0.

Sour Grapes - the half time fiasco
Temperatures must have soared over the half time interval as even Micah Hyde went short sleeved in the second period, dominated by the visitors and one where the Clarets worryingly failed to muster a single shot on target as the home side fought bravely and eventually hung on for a hard earned point.

Bromby's long throws were the feature of the half and their low, flat trajectory caused many a moment for the Clarets rearguard. Coyne had his moment with one of them only five minutes in and he could be thankful to Sinclair's awareness when clearing the danger in the six yard box, but the threat continued and Blades cut open the Clarets to equalise two minutes later.

Chaplow's attempt to thwart a Bromby throw was penalised by Mr Joslin and the retake was glanced goal wards first by Morgan and then by Gray stooping to head home from close range as the visitors drew level on fifty two minutes.

The goal inspired the visitors who were more able to lift their game and defy the conditions with a surge forwards from this point in the game. Liddell was denied a by fine save from Coyne on the hour mark and the home side played out a remarkable scene emulating the Alamo with a desperate defending sequence of bodies being throw in as Blades laid siege to the goal at one point, resulting in treatment needed to both Duff and Coyne.

Ward replaced Hayles as Warnock looked to take all three points with the Clarets middle three of Chaplow, Grant and Hyde succumbing to their counterparts as the half progressed.

Clarets best opportunity came with a quarter hour remaining, when Moore was felled by Morgan in the "D". It was not Blake's day though and his wayward free kick wasted the good opportunity.

Talented youngster Forte replaced Liddell for the final ten minutes, before Roche came on for Grant as Clarets looked to protect the point in the final stages, yet there was one last moment that should have seen all the points going the way of South Yarkshire, thankfully Ward's close range shot hit bar instead of the back of the net before Mr Joslin blew time on an entertaining game in the new Championship campaign.

FT 1-1.

A fine Claret

Danny Coyne. On a day when all in Clarets defence stood up to be counted, Danny Coyne produced two top drawer saves on top of a good all round display of 'keeping to ensure a well earned point.

Sour grapes

There's not much to complain about from this one, but the half time fiasco with the tannoy system and the failing music for the cheerleaders was little more than embarrassing. Is it possible we can see a return to the priority and announcement of half time scores and ticket news please?
